Intumescent
Structural steelwork begins to lose its integrity at 600 degrees causing the entire building structure to become unsafe. FireSpec provides and applies an intumescent coating to steel to provide 60 minute or 120 minute protection for the structural steel. FireSpec has been contracted to undertake the protection of steelwork at Loch Logon in Bloemfontein, the largest single application of intumescent coating in the country to date.

FireSpec offers both a water based product (for internal use) and a solvent based product (for external use). We are specialists in this area and can offer assistance in product specification specific to project needs. We use an internally plasticized acrylic thixotropic material, comprising flame retardant chemicals. Fillers and pigments. The product contains no harmful halogens or asbestos.
In the event of a fire, the coating will expand many times its dry film thickness to form a thermally insulating char, which keeps the structural steel below 600 degree for the stipulated time period. Application of this coating is quick and easy, involving application of a primer, a coating of the WB or SB coating, followed by the application of a top coat, which is available in a full range of colours.
